The Sattler Media Group is once again committed to improving educational opportunities in Africa: for the second time since 2022, the company is supporting the construction of a school in Malawi. In cooperation with the association reisende werkschule scholen e.V., a new school building with two classrooms was constructed in the Mangochi region in the fall of 2024 – in just eight weeks.
The special feature: the construction project was realized together with nine young people from the German youth welfare system. Since 2001, the reisende werkschule scholen e.V. has been supporting young people who cannot cope with conventional school life through projects involving practical learning, travel and social engagement. The young people were actively involved in the construction process in Malawi – together with supervisors, local workers and members of the village community.
Despite the challenging conditions on site – no electricity, water transport in barrels, manual mixing of cement – the school construction was successfully completed. The joint work, but also the cultural exchange while living together in the village, playing soccer or swimming in Lake Malawi, made the project a profound learning experience.
“The combination of German youth aid and development cooperation in Malawi fascinates us. For us as a company, it is a matter close to our hearts to help where help is urgently needed. Education is the key to a better future – and we are delighted to be able to open up new prospects for children in Malawi through this project,” says Martin Koschei, Managing Partner of the Sattler Media Group.
Following the construction of a fourth school block for Nangungu Primary School in 2022, the first school block of the newly founded Mchengani Primary School in Mpangama Village on the eastern shore of Lake Malawi has now been completed. The building was handed over to the local school authorities in a festive ceremony.
In addition to the actual construction, school materials – such as exercise books, pens and furniture – are also provided. The positive effects are measurable: the school enrolment rate in the region is increasing, the distances to school are significantly shorter and girls in particular are given better educational opportunities.
The region is regularly affected by climate-related extreme weather events, which means that crop failures threaten the livelihoods of many people. Here too, the Sattler Media Group is showing solidarity and supporting the initiative of the reisende werkschule, which is organizing aid deliveries of maize this winter.
